Chapter Thirteen

Down to the matts

I pushed out of the doorway, leaving the Lodge behind. My mind was filled with names...useless names. There had to be a way out of this. Something I wasn’t seeing.

Something right in front of me.

As I walked back to the main building, a flash of white followed, before the Demon bunny let out a hideous screech and scurried further into the trees. The breeze picked up, casting the deep, savage scent of male and Lion. I wrinkled my nose and stopped in the middle of the path. The scent grew stronger. The longer I stood here, the more vulnerable I felt. Hairs stood on my arms as movement came from the trees. I could smell them out there, waiting…hunting. I took a step, but it wasn’t toward the main building, or behind me to the Lodge. It was to the trees, facing the scum who wanted control.

“I’m not scared of you, not any of you. I’ll find a way out of this for Salome. I swear to you...you’ll never control her. You’ll never touch her. Not if I can help it.”

There was no movement in the trees, but a low grow rumbled on the wind.

I forced myself not to run, but to walk slowly all the way back to the main building.

The bell rang for the next class as the door closed behind me. I stumbled to the wall and leaned into the corner, taking long, hard breaths. My hands were trembling, still I clenched my fist, willing the shaking away, and then headed to the gymnasium.

I hurried into the women’s changing room, and quickly opened my locker. One careful glance over my shoulder and I took off my shirt and skirt, changing into roomy sweat shorts and a soft, hugging t-shirt. I stashed them away before I hurried from the change room and into the hall.

Combat class had already started. The other students were gathered on the floor mats around our instructor. I rushed inside and glanced back at the door swinging shut. My nerves were shot to hell, the hairs on my arms still standing on end. Ava turned her head toward me, and then shifted over, making room as I hurried over.

Salome and Nesrin sat toward the back of the class, staring at anything but Mr. Marlow who stood in the middle of the circle.

“Now, not all shifters are graced with agility. The trick is to not just find your strengths, but also your opponent’s weaknesses. Hunting, combat, they’re just the same. They’re your prey, and you’re searching for a way to take them down.”

Mr. Marlow raised his gaze to look at me as I crumpled next to Ava.

“Nice of you to join us, Ms Livingstone.”

“Sorry, Sir. I was coming back from the Lodge.”

One nod of his head and all was forgiven.

“So,” he continued. “I want you to remember, it’s more about your opponent than it ever is about you.”

There was a snarl, then a scuffle from the Wolves. I didn’t need to lift my head to see who it was.
